John is an English artist and illustrator. He trained at Birmingham Art College where he studied illustration.
He works as a successful professional freelance artist, working in all mediums, but specialising in watercolour. He has over thirty years experience and currently teaches groups of adults. He encourages them to relax and enjoy the painting experience by giving demonstrations, using a bold, loose, step-by-step approach to the medium. John undertakes private commissions and also tries to find the time to indulge his passion for plein-air painting, especially in Tuscany.
John is a regular visitor to Castello di Meleto and knows the area well.
Watercolour Course 2009
The six-day watercolour course offers beginners/intermediate artists the opportunity to enjoy painting the beautiful Tuscan landscape and architecture. Based at Castello di Meleto, there will also be excursions to other nearby inspiring locations, to be finalised later, but likely to include Radda in Chianti, Castellina, Gaiole in Chianti and maybe Pienza. A visit to Siena may also be arranged.
A typical day will begin at 9.30 or 10.00 am depending on whether we stay on site at Meleto or take an excursion.
Commencing with a short demonstration by John (about 30-40 minutes) after which students will paint and receive personal tuition.
A break for lunch (not included in price when on excursions), and then continue painting until approximately 4.00 pm.
At the end of the session, at Meleto there will be a short critique, followed by free time.
Maybe relax by the pool, until dinner at the castle’s own restaurant, Fornace di Meleto.
Please note that Castello di Meleto is not a hotel, and does not have a bar or after-hours facilities.
The accommodation has modern self-catering facilities.
Car hire is advisable, if guests wish explore and visit other local bars or restaurants (of which there are many).

Gaiole in Chianti, the nearest village, is approximately 2k from the castle.
