It is the driest and coldest among the estates. The slopes are steep, and the altitude reaches almost 530 meters above sea level. Sangiovese finds extreme climatic conditions here, resulting in low yields but high quality wines and fragrances, thanks to the significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, especially in summer. The soil is clayey with large amounts of skeletal material composed of alberese and galestro. Here is born the Vigna Poggiarso Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.
The alberese soil is widespread in many areas of Tuscany and is mainly composed of a mixture of clay, limestone, and sandstone schists. This soil is well-drained and has a good water retention capacity, characteristics that favor the development of deep vine roots. The clay present in alberese soil contributes to the retention of nutrients, essential for the healthy growth of plants. Galestro is a type of soil typical of the Tuscan region, characterized by fractured schistose rocks that appear in the form of fragments or flakes. This soil is known for its ability to retain heat during the day and release it gradually during the night, creating an ideal environment for vine roots. Additionally, galestro promotes water drainage and prevents excessive water retention, reducing the risk of waterlogging that could damage the roots.
